With POWER kidZ (PKZ), we believe that freedom fighters are educated about their community and world...so we keep learning and keep fighting!
PKZ has been a part of POWER for a long time, but now things are getting serious. POWER hired Xochitl Moreno in January 2008 to coordinate a dynamic childcare program within the organization. Many POWER members are also parents so when POWER holds meetings and events, it’s a family affair. The office and meeting room fill, everyone starts eating and talking, and little ones are running around seeing what can been seen....
Then suddenly the meeting begins and the children are dropped off in the child care room. This is when the fun starts! From heritage dream trees to oppression mazes, to creating a performance for the community, we are trying to provide fun time for play and interaction while passing on important knowledge and creating a space for learning of all kinds. The long term goals of POWER KIDZ are:
- Nurture each child's Self /Group Awareness, Identity and Expression
- Foster Critical Thinking
- Promote awareness of Global Justice Issues
- Provide basic historical education of Colonization/ Imperialism/Indigenous History
- Activate into Action! Cultivate each child's ability to stand up for themselves and others in the face of bias.
POWER KidZ will continue to lay strong foundations for a group of young fearless leaders to emerge and face tomorrow with open hearts and minds plus plenty of dedication.
PKZ is currently seeking volunteers for meetings and performance planning. We also need donations of books, toys and creative activity supplies. To support PKZ, contact childcare@poepleorganized.org!
