Meet The Members
For more than ten years, POWER has brought about many important changes. Many of these successes have been forcing public policy to address issues of poverty and oppression from the root cause. But many of our most powerful successes have not been in the realm of policy. Many of our victories have been to help POWER members to see themselves as being in control of their own destiny.
As low-income women and men build community with others and take action to create social change, POWER members begin to see themselves as POWERful agents of change, able to shape their day-to-day conditions. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said "You can only ride (someone's) back when that (person) is hunched over. Once a (person) stands up straight, nobody can ride him (or her) like a mule."
Everyday, POWER members learn the skills to keep their backs straight. Here are some of POWER members' own successes stories in their own words.
